Write a manual

A manual is written as a tree of sections whose numbering nobody types. Move a chapter, and everything beneath it renumbers itself.

Open the document and select Write. If a revision is already in force, select Open the next revision first — it starts as a copy of the one in force.

The left of the page is the Outline. To add a section:

  1. Type its Title — for example Organisation and responsibilities.

  2. Choose where it goes under Inside — At the top level, or inside another section.

  3. Choose its Kind, then select Add.

Kind How it is numbered
Body 1, 1.1, 1.1.1 — from where it sits.
Appendix Letters itself — A, B — and numbers inside itself.
Unnumbered A foreword or preamble.

Use Move this section to reorder; numbers follow. Leave Number empty to number a section from where it sits.

Add a generated page places a page Wingcert writes for you — the list of effective pages, contents, record of revisions, highlights of change, the distribution list and others. Wingcert writes this one: you choose where it sits, and nobody types into it.

Select a section to open the editor. The toolbar has bold, italic, highlight, lists, tables, and boxed Note and Caution callouts. Start on a new page forces a page break before it in the PDF.

Use Insert a cross-reference rather than typing “see 4.2”. You pick the target section, and its number is worked out every time the manual is read or printed — so moving a chapter can never leave a reference pointing at the wrong place. If the target is deleted, the reference says so.

Under Paragraphs this section addresses, pick the paragraphs the section satisfies from the regulation library. They are printed under the heading — for example [Ref: 145.A.70(a)(1); AMC1 145.A.70(a)(1);] — and resolved every time, so an amendment cannot make them stale.

Picking them is also what lets your compliance cross-reference show which paragraphs nothing addresses.

When the revision is ready, submit it for approval.
